Mazda CX-5: Part Sport Utility, Part Sports Car

September 9th, 2011

The all-new Mazda CX-5 crossover will soon arrive in U.S. showrooms to take on the likes on the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. To standout from the venerable competition, the CX-5 will blend utility with sports car dynamics.

Mazda infused the CX-5 with its all-new SKYACTIV powertrain technologies and also tuned its suspension for sporty handling. Under the hood is an all-new 2.0-liter gasoline engine mated to new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. There’s even a all-new 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel available. Regardless of powertrain configurations, Mazda promises sporting performance and efficiency.

The new gasoline engine produces 15 per cent more torque while consuming 15 per cent less fuel than the outgoing four-cylinder engine that has been featured in the Mazda Tribute. It generates 165 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque.

SKYACTIV technologies also include i-stop, an idle stop system that shuts down the engine when the vehicle comes to a standstill. This system, commonly found on hybrids like the Toyota Prius, will help the CX-5 conserve fuel even more. Performance and fuel economy is also aided by the vehicle’s lightweight body.

The CX-5 will make its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. More details on the North American model will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. When it goes on sale, come to Borgman Mazda to take a test-drive!
