Mazda has announced that the upcoming all-new Mazda2 will feature the SKYACTIV-D 1.5, a newly-developed 1.5-liter clean diesel engine using Mazda’s next-generation SKYACTIV technology.

Similar to the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine in the CX-5, the SKYACTIV-D 1.5 was developed for ideal combustion despite a low compression ratio. The result is an engine that boasts outstanding dynamic performance, with torque equal to a 2.5-liter gas engine, linear acceleration, and excellent environmental performance.

The SKYACTIV-D 1.5 is a subcompact powerhouse. Improving on the 2.2 model, the 1.5 has an expanded homogenous lean burn range, further reduction in mechanical resistance, and insulation technology to curb the increase in cooling loss associated with a smaller engine size.

Combined with Mazda’s i-stop idling stop technology, i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system, and high-efficiency SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission, the SKYACTIV-D 1.5 will ensure the all-new Mazda2 a drastically improved fuel economy, environmental accolades, and a whole lot of zip.
